Characterizing and Detecting Integrity Issues in OWL Instance Data

چکیده
OWL instance data evaluation, identified by our previous work, is to check whether the instance data conforms to the semantic expectation of its targeting applications. We have identified some integrity issues raised by applications demanding closed world reasoning. In this paper, we present a formal characterization of those integrity issues using autoepistemic operators. This approach allows users to selectively enforce integrity constraints on individual classes and properties, thus allows not only global but also local closed world reasoning with OWL instance data. We also show a practical SPARQL-based approach that is a sound approximation for detecting integrity issues.

Adding Integrity Constraints to the Semantic Web for Instance Data Evaluation
This paper presents our work on supporting evaluation of integrity constraint issues in semantic web instance data. We propose an alternative semantics for the ontology language, i.e., OWL, a decision procedure for constraint evaluation by query answering, and an approach of explaining and repairing integrity constraint violations by utilizing the justifications of conjunctive query answers. ke...
متن کاملTowards Integrity Constraints in OWL
In many data-centric applications, it is desirable to use OWL as an expressive schema language with which one expresses constraints that must be satisfied by instance data. However, specific aspects of OWL’s standard semantics—i.e., the Open World Assumption (OWA) and the absence of Unique Name Assumption (UNA)—make it difficult to use OWL in this way. What triggers a constraint violation in cl...
متن کاملIntegrity Constraints in OWL
In many data-centric semantic web applications, it is desirable to use OWL to encode the Integrity Constraints (IC) that must be satisfied by instance data. However, challenges arise due to the Open World Assumption (OWA) and the lack of a Unique Name Assumption (UNA) in OWL’s standard semantics. In particular, conditions that trigger constraint violations in systems using the ClosedWorld Assum...
متن کاملOpening, Closing Worlds - On Integrity Constraints
In many data-centric applications it is desirable to use OWL as an expressive schema language where one expresses constraints that need to be satisfied by the (instance) data. However, some features of OWL’s semantics, specifically the Open World Assumption (OWL) and not having a Unique Name Assumption (UNA), make it hard to use OWL for this task. What would trigger a constraint violation in a ...
متن کاملDescribing Reasoning Results with RVO, the Reasoning Violations Ontology
This paper presents a new OWL RL ontology, the Reasoning Violations Ontology (RVO), which describes both ABox and TBox reasoning errors produced by DL reasoners. This is to facilitate the integration of reasoners into data engineering tool-chains. The ontology covers violations of OWL 2 direct semantics and syntax detected on both the schema and instance level over the full range of OWL 2 and R...
